More about the Impilo Collection Foundation and their founder, Angela Yeung
Empowering lives, one peak at a time
Physical exertion, unwavering determination and a deep passion for impacting the lives of young people are the cornerstones of Angela Yeung's journey. In 2023, she made history by becoming the first South African female to reach the True Summit of Manaslu, the world's eighth highest mountain. Manaslu is 8 163 metres above sea level and is situated in the Mansiri Himal, part of the Nepalese Himalayas, in west-central Nepal.
The founder of Impilo Collection Foundation is a multi-faceted trailblazer
Angela Yeung wears many hats: philanthropist, award-winning bespoke jewellery designer, wife, mother, and most recently, mountaineer. Her relentless pursuit of social justice has been the driving force behind her numerous accomplishments.
In a life filled with difficulties, Angela believes that you can only give what you truly have. After 30 years of searching for her biological mother, she finally met her in 2017. Her childhood hardships and experiences as a mother have fueled her desire to lead by example.
She founded the Impilo Collection Foundation, a humanitarian project that supports the Empower Her, Empower Him and Empower Them initiatives. Through these projects, she shares her adventures and mountain experiences, encouraging others to never give up. Angela participated in Trek4Mandela, climbing Kilimanjaro for Caring4Girls in 2018 and 2019, a foundation that provides sanitary pads for girls.
Her sense of mission led her to climb Manaslu in October 2023, aiming to raise funds for an educational center at House of Paradise in Kathlehong and to raise awareness of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). The center's goal is to empower and uplift young women who have faced GBV, giving them the tools to take control of their destinies.
Creating awareness and giving back
Angela’s efforts to raise awareness for GBV included hanging 100 bras at the Manaslu base camp, sparking curiosity among the 339 climbers from 47 countries.
Before her climb, she visited two local schools in Nepal, donating 40kg of clothes, shoes, and toys, and engaging with the children. This act of kindness showcased her commitment to giving back to the community.
In 2021, Angela’s foundation collected 6 200 bras, which were displayed at Constitutional Hill. With the support of her social warriors, they handed a memorandum to the Department of Public Safety. She also climbed Island Peak in 2022 to further echo the campaign #EmpowerHer.
Future Endeavours
Angela aims to collect 8 848 bras, symbolic of the height of Mount Everest. Despite sustaining an ankle injury during her Manaslu climb, she plans to climb Ama Dablam in October 2024 to focus on her technical skills ahead of her proposed Everest climb in 2025.
