China: pollution & politics - will the smog ever lift?

Pollution poses a very real threat to Party Leader Xi’s proclaimed ‘China Dream’. Only last year, the Environmental Ministry put the estimated economic cost of air pollution at 3.5% of annual GDP, whilst a World Bank Report proposed an even more alarmist figure of 9% of annual gross national income.
