QUICK LINKS
The biggest news for the final quarter of 2024 was Donald Trump winning the US election. Global markets largely tracked sideways over the quarter, however, the election of President Trump was received positively by the US stock market and the S&P 500 gained 2.4% over the period. This was largely due to the President-elect’s pro-growth policies such as lower corporate tax rates and deregulation. In US dollar terms, most other major markets underperformed the MSCI All World Index as Trump’s expected tariff policies weighed on sentiment. Overall, the MSCI All World Index fell 0.9%, while the Ashburton Global Equity Growth Fund (I Class USD) rose 1.3%. Pleasingly, for the full year, the Global Equity Growth Fund has managed to outperform the MSCI All World Index in a very concentrated market.
Looking ahead into 2025 we are cautiously optimistic. The MSCI All World Index is trading above its five-year average forward price to earnings. However, earnings growth for the S&P 500 is expected to be low double digits and far broader based than we saw in 2024 supported by pro-growth policies and falling interest rates even if slower than previously expected.
